For the curious
Tenebrio molitor (commonly known as mealworm) is the larval form of the mealworm beetle. Due to its high nutrient density and ability to thrive off food byproducts like spent grain and juice pulp eliminating waste, mealworms are now farmed in Canada as a safe and sustainable protein source.
Our tenebrio molitor are raised and processed in Montreal and are subject to strict Canadian food safety standards and regulations.
Yes! Mealworms are 100% safe to consume. Humans have been eating insects like mealworms for millennia, and now that mealworms are farmed specifically for human consumption in Canada, all Canadian laws and regulations applicable to animal rearing and meat processing apply to mealworm farming and processing.
To reduce food waste our mealworms are fed organic juice pulps from local juice manufacturers and spent grain from breweries that would have otherwise been thrown out.
Producing tenebrio molitor protein requires significantly less water, land, and feed compared to traditional animal protein. Additionally, mealworms produce fewer greenhouse gases and eliminate food waste that would have otherwise decomposed, releasing methane. Finally, even tenebrio molitor frass is used as an organic fertilizer, ensuring a zero waste, circular system.
